DermaPen
You’ve probably heard of microneedling, an old-school skin treatment that’s found its second life as the cool new thing and a youth-rediscovering alternative to some laser treatments. The idea behind it is fairly simple. The treatment creates a series of tiny injuries in the skin to promote collagen growth.
At Revitta, we perform treatment with DermaPen —a microneedling handheld device with small needles on the head—which is used to create tiny tunnels in the skin revolutionary skin rejuvenating device called a Dermapen. The device has very fine needles that make thousands of minuscule punctures or “micro-injuries” to the skin’s outermost layers. It will stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, produce more collagen & elastin, and create smoother, tighter & younger-looking skin.
The Dermapen allows the medical esthetician to precisely control the spacing, frequency, depth & pattern of the needle punctures. It’s better if microneedling is done with a device that hits your skin surface at a 90-degree (perpendicular) angle to minimize scraping, scratching, or other trauma that could cause scarring. DermaPen does it.
Let’s talk about the science of microneedling, a procedure that helps skin behave more youthfully again. To make it simple: small needles create tiny tunnels in the skin. The healing process of those exact injuries helps promote elastin collagen production, which makes the skin thicker, minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin tone in much the same way as some laser treatments. It’s a great way to encourage the skin’s natural ability to produce what we want the most. By piercing the skin (epidermis and dermis), the skin’s natural response is to go into a phase called wound healing. This process stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis. The problem with many laser treatments is that certain skin types don’t respond well (for those prone to hyperpigmentation, like many people of color tend to be). Microneedling, on the other hand, can be suitable for any skin.
In addition to collagen production, microneedling also makes it easier for products to be absorbed deeply into the skin. The microchannels that are created aid in maximum absorption of topical nutrients and jump-start your body’s own collagen and elastin production. It makes Dermapen an excellent choice to facilitate the delivery of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and mesotherapy products (as part of PRP Facial and Mesotherapy / Mesoglow treatments). And we love the results!
Needle Up
First medical aesthetician cleans and preps your skin.
Then the pen is run over your face and neck – imagine a lot of little needles pulsing into your skin. It feels like a light, sandpaper-like vibration…some compare it to a cat licking your face, which is pretty accurate.
We also use a “stamping” technique to crisscross over the face area requiring more attention (like the laugh lines, “crow feet”, etc.). If the initial part of the treatment feels like dragging the needles at the skin surface, then “stamping” feels like a deeper, more concentrated pressing motion.
We end treatment with LED red light therapy, NeoCutis serum, and a soothing Gel Mask.
The Aftermath
Look at yourself in the mirror. Your skin might be slightly irritated, but more like a pinkish flush rather than full-on red, and certainly not bloody. But it was radiant, glowing. Your old, dull skin had molted off, revealing fresher, newer skin beneath it. Fine lines seem to have smoothed out, and pores look smaller. We recommend slathering on hydration and serum throughout the day.
Microneedling is gentle enough to be performed every 14-30 days in the office. You can get at-home (choose the right one, some devices might have low-quality needles that are slightly angled or bent & can hurt your skin) to use daily between office visits.
With age, the production of Collagen and elastin naturally diminishes. This decrease causes wrinkles, saggy skin & a hollowing effect. Through collagen induction therapy, like microneedling, the skin can be prompted to heal & repair itself. It results in skin that is more youthful & supple.
Microneedling has been scientifically demonstrated to improve fine lines, freckles, sun spots, scars, burns, pitted & non-pitted acne scars, stretch marks & large pores. The Dermapen is being used more & more as an alternative to more aggressive cosmetic procedures.
Dermapen can be used alone or as a supplement to other procedures to increase their effectiveness. Dermapen treatment also increases the efficacy of topical cosmetic products such as anti-aging creams & serums.
